| Corsica | |
| Located 110 mls SE of Nice and over 55 mls W of the Italian mainland, Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean and measures about 112 by 55 mls between its farthest points. Despite its size, the population is a mere 250,000. The undeveloped interior comprises rugged granite mountains, pine forest and thick scrubland known as maquis and much of the island is afforded official protection within a regional park. The W coast in particular has dramatic cliffs, headlands and isolated rocky coves. A few beaches can also be found dotted around the island. Ajaccio in the SW and historic Bastia in the N are the largest towns. Corsica has an eventful past, a target of invasion from numerous armies through thousands of years, but it is best known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1769. ‹ back to offer |
